Nurturing Careers in IT

Our managing director, Ian Groves, credits his career partly to the work experience opportunity he had, so he’s always been keen to support work experience opportunities for others.

This summer we’ve taken on more work experience placements than ever before.

One of the work experience students was Luke.

He is a year 10 student from Mary Webb School who has a general interest in IT and wanted to find out more about different roles in the industry. He wrote us this lovely message…

“I am writing to say thank you very much for the one week work experience your company has provided me with. It has given me a really good insight into what your company does and how you solve your client problems. I would like to say a big thank you to Ellis and Ryan for taking me round to customer sites within the week. I would also like to thank Josh from the service desk for being with me for the majority of the week talking through what they do and explaining things in detail for me to understand. Yet again, thank you for allowing me to do work experience with your company.”

We also welcomed Anastasia from the Corbett School.

She’s a year 10 student currently studying for her GCSE in Computer Science. She wanted to learn more about what Start Tech does and the roles available in a business like ours. She spent time in every department learning the ropes and visited one of our clients with Ryan.

Finally, we had Josh, a year 12 student from The Marches School (pictured at the top). He’s currently studying for a BTEC in IT and was eager to apply his knowledge in a practical setting.

As well as work experience placements, we support T-Level Placements and apprenticeships here at Start Tech. Of our 19 employees, 7 started as apprentices, which includes 2 of the management team.

Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards

Our practice of nurturing careers in tech has been reflected in the recently announced shortlist for the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards. Start Tech is one of three shortlisted businesses in the small employer category and Ryan Ward has been shortlisted in the IT and Digital category. Well done Ryan!

Ryan was our first Project Technician Apprentice, having moved over from another company that wasn’t offering him the progression he desired. In July 2023 he completed his Level 3 Information Communication Technician apprenticeship course with distinction.

He’s our key member of the team who is out and about fixing issues at our client sites. If you’re one of our clients, you’ve likely encountered his dedicated and helpful approach to his work.

His current field role is great preparation for his career going forward. It’s been fantastic to see his progression from the start of his apprenticeship and how brilliant he is with our work experience students and new apprentices. He has a bright future ahead of him.
